  The Cake:

This was another element I was really into. Funny to think about now, considering I glanced over at it a total of two times and had one bite of it the entire wedding!

The wedding cake has now become an art form. In nearly all communities in all corners of the world, there is someone who can concoct for you a creation more beautiful than the bride herself. What you choose depends solely upon your taste and your budget.

As with the flowers, I obsessed over the cake. I found so many of them to be incredibly beautiful, much too stunning to eat. I even became so fascinated by this new art form that I took a cake decorating class!

In the end, I didn’t spend any extra money on the cake. I used the bakery that was offered as part of the deal with the country club where we were having the wedding. First, however, I ordered one of their cakes for my bridal shower, so that I could be sure I was happy with not only the way it looked, but also with the way it tasted. When I was, I went ahead and ordered my dream cake: a three leveled stacked cake (one layer on top of the other) with a basket-weave icing in ivory, with real cream colored roses dotting the top. Inside, it had something for everyone: one layer was chocolate cake, one yellow, and the fillings in-between were chocolate mousse and raspberry jam. I’m told it was quite delicious, although, since I only had that one bite, I wouldn’t know!

One final note about the wedding cakes: your baker will likely offer you a choice of buttercream icing or rolled fondant. Fondant is that perfectly smooth coating normally seen in magazines; they use it because it appears flawless. However, it has a bitter, bland taste and I don’t recommend it for those who want their cake to taste, and not simply look, delicious.

A Final Thought:

Everyone will tell you to relax and just have fun, but the truth is that at moments, it isn’t fun. Just like anything else that is worth your while, it takes sacrifice, commitment, and perserverence. Always try to keep your eye on the goal of being proud as you walk down the aisle, into the reception, and as you take that first dance with your new husband or wife. This will get you through the trying times.

Although planning the wedding will take up much of your energy and time, try not to let it interfere with your relationship with your fiancé. After all, it’s because of your love for this person that you’re putting yourself through this to begin with! Never forget what’s important.

I hope that my experiences, both good and bad, have helped those of you who are just kicking off the walk that leads to the long road of wedding planning. If you have any comments or questions about anything I’ve written, or something I haven’t, please write to me care of Wedding Ideas. I’m starting a monthly column where I’ll answer your questions in as thorough a way as possible.

Now, get busy planning! [page 3]
