  Photographer and Videographer:

I think, with the photographer and videographer, it is important to ask around for recommendations. Think of anyone you know who’s gotten married in your geographic region, call them, and ask them who they used. If they were happy, call that person and ask to make an appointment. This is especially true of the photographer, because the types of pictures they take and the packages they offer run the gamut, and what you want and what they offer can differ greatly.

I, for one, wanted lots of black-and-white photographs, and lots of candid (i.e. "Action shots.") I am told that many brides of my generation are requesting this, as the formalized, "posed" portraits seem more and more antiquated. Still, there are plenty of women who prefer these more traditional photos. (Often parents still want the traditional portrait to frame and display, too.)

Most of us fall somewhere in the middle, with a desire to have a book that is about half candid, half portrait. Similarly, this generation requests that half the photos be developed in color, half in black-and-white. Most good photographers these days will develop the proofs in color and then let you choose whether you want it developed in black-or-white or color. This is what I’m doing.

It seemed to me that videographers all tend to offer the same choices: two or three video packages, one of which is simply the ceremony and reception, the other of which incorporates childhood photographs of the bride and groom, narration, and music. We opted for the first, and less expensive, option. After all, who wants to remember those awful first grade haircuts, anyway?! [page 4] [page 2]
